“Original” and “genuine-grade” are not the same thing. A genuine-grade screen is a high-quality panel that matches the original spec (usually OLED), but it doesn’t come in an Apple box. The real difference between grades shows up in brightness, colour accuracy, True Tone, touch feel, and durability, and the price follows the grade. A screen that’s too cheap is often an LCD swapped in for OLED, or a lower panel grade. When you repair a screen, ask the grade first. At Chamo, we tell you straight which grade you’re getting.
Bila skrin phone pecah, semua kedai kata “original”, tapi maksud “original” tu berbeza-beza.
When a phone screen cracks, every shop says “original”, but “original” means different things to different people. Some mean a high-quality OLED panel; some mean a cheap LCD that looks “fine” when it’s new. We won’t say other shops are bad, the real issue is that customers rarely know what they’re buying. This article explains screen grades honestly: what changes between grades, why the price differs, and the questions you should ask before you pay.
“Original” vs “genuine-grade”: apa bezanya?
“Original” vs “genuine-grade”: what’s the difference?
Honestly, almost no ordinary repair shop gets a genuine “original Apple” screen in an Apple box, Apple doesn’t sell separate panels to the general repair market. So when a shop says “original”, it usually means genuine-grade: a panel that matches the original spec in quality. We deliberately use “genuine-grade” and not “genuine”/”original Apple”, because in Malaysia (Trade Descriptions Act 2011) claiming “original Apple” for a non-Apple part can be a false description. What matters isn’t the word on the label, it’s the actual panel grade that goes into your phone.
Jenis-jenis skrin gantian (secara jujur)
Types of replacement screens (honestly)
Here’s the real landscape of replacement screens in the market, from highest to lowest grade:
If you are weighing the authorised service centre against an independent shop, we set out the five things worth comparing in authorised service centre versus independent repair.
Panel grades, high to low:
• OEM / genuine-grade OLED, panel OLED yang menyamai spec asal. Brightness penuh, warna tepat, True Tone jalan, rasa touch macam asal. Ini yang kami guna.
• Aftermarket OLED (soft/hard), OLED bukan-OEM.
• LCD ganti OLED, model asalnya OLED, tapi diganti LCD murah. Ini punca “rasa lain”, warna kurang pekat, hitam jadi kelabu, brightness rendah, dan touch kadang kurang responsif.
• Refurbished / reclaimed, kaca depan ditukar tapi panel asal dikitar semula.
• OEM / genuine-grade OLED, an OLED panel that matches the original spec. Full brightness, accurate colour, True Tone works, touch feels like the original. This is what we use.
• Aftermarket OLED (soft/hard), non-OEM OLED. Can look fine up close, but sometimes brightness or colour is slightly off, and durability varies by supplier.
• LCD instead of OLED, the model was originally OLED, but a cheaper LCD is fitted. This is the source of the “feels different” complaint, colours less rich, blacks turn grey, lower brightness, and touch is sometimes less responsive.
• Refurbished / reclaimed, the front glass is swapped but the panel is recycled. Cheap, but the risk of dead pixels or lines showing up later is higher.
Apa yang sebenarnya berubah antara gred
What actually changes between grades
Bukan semua orang perasan beza masa mula pasang. Tapi lepas beberapa minggu, benda-benda ni yang buat pelanggan rasa “eh, lain macam”:
Not everyone notices the difference right after fitting. But after a few weeks, these are the things that make customers feel “hmm, it’s different”:
What changes with grade:
• Brightness, gred rendah / LCD selalunya kurang terang, susah nampak bawah matahari.
Sebab tu harga rendah selalu = gred rendah.
• Brightness, lower grade / LCD is often dimmer and hard to see under the sun.
• Colour accuracy, lower-grade panels are less accurate; blacks look grey (LCD can’t produce deep blacks like OLED).
• True Tone, sometimes doesn’t work or is lost after a low-grade screen swap.
• Touch feel, touch response is less smooth on some cheap panels.
• Durability, lower-grade panels are more prone to lines, dead pixels, or early burn-in.
• Price, genuine-grade OLED costs more; LCD / reclaimed is cheaper. That’s why a low price usually means a low grade.
Kenapa skrin “terlalu murah” patut buat anda tanya
Why a “too cheap” screen should make you ask
If one shop quotes far lower than the rest, it’s not necessarily dishonest, but it’s a grade signal. A genuine-grade OLED panel has a cost; if the price is too low for an OLED model, it’s likely an LCD swapped in for OLED or a lower-grade / reclaimed panel. There’s nothing wrong with choosing the cheaper option if you truly understand what you’re getting, the problem is when you think you bought OLED but got LCD. That’s why the question matters more than the price.
⚠️ Ask these before you pay
1. “Skrin ni OLED atau LCD?” (kalau model asal OLED, LCD = downgrade). 2. “Gred apa, genuine-grade OEM, aftermarket, atau reclaimed?” 3. “True Tone jalan lepas tukar?” 4.
1. “Is this OLED or LCD?” (if the original is OLED, LCD is a downgrade). 2. “What grade, genuine-grade OEM, aftermarket, or reclaimed?” 3. “Does True Tone still work after the swap?” 4. “How long is the warranty?” An honest shop answers straight without dodging. If the answer is vague, that itself is an answer.
Panel quality matters when buying used, too. How to check it is covered in our used Android buying checklist, including burn-in and AMOLED line defects.

FAQ
Most repair shops don’t get a genuine “original Apple” panel in an Apple box. “Genuine-grade” means a high-quality panel (usually OLED) that matches the original spec. We use “genuine-grade” to stay honest and compliant with the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, not to claim it’s a genuine Apple part.
Selalunya sebab gred berbeza.
Usually because the grade differs. A genuine-grade OLED panel has a cost; a price that’s too low for an OLED model usually means an LCD swapped in for OLED, or a reclaimed / low-grade panel. Ask whether it’s OLED or LCD before you pay.
Signs of an LCD swapped for OLED: low brightness, blacks that look grey (not deep), less rich colours, and True Tone sometimes missing. The surest way, ask the shop straight what grade they’re fitting, and have it written on the receipt / warranty.
If you want full brightness, accurate colour, working True Tone and longer life, yes, genuine-grade OLED is worth it. If the budget is tight and you understand the trade-offs, a cheaper option can be acceptable. What matters is knowing what you’re buying. At Chamo we explain both before you choose.
