Most phones that auto-restart on their own are down to SOFTWARE, a buggy app, an outdated OS, full storage, too many background apps, or a failed update. These are all fixable yourself: update the OS, remove the offending app, free up storage, and reset settings. But if the phone reboots in a loop (bootloop), or shuts off and restarts on its own at around 30-40% battery, that’s a HARDWARE sign, usually a weak battery or the board. That’s when it needs checking.
A phone that suddenly restarts on its own mid-WhatsApp, mid-game, or right after you pocket it, it genuinely makes us panic, especially when it keeps happening. But don’t jump to “the phone is badly broken.” Most auto-restart cases come from software you can fix yourself in a few minutes. This article covers the software causes first (the easy fixes), then the hardware causes, and when a reboot is actually a signal that the battery or board has a problem.
SOFTWARE causes (you can fix these)
Before assuming hardware, most auto-restarts come from software, all of these you can sort out yourself without opening the phone:
• A buggy / broken app, one crashing app can force the whole phone to reboot, especially a freshly updated or unstable app.
• An outdated OS, old iOS/Android versions carry bugs already fixed in the latest update.
• Storage nearly full, when memory runs low, the phone lacks room to operate and can reboot on its own.
• Too many background apps, with RAM full, the system force-kills processes and sometimes restarts.
• A failed update, an OS update interrupted (dead battery / lost signal) can leave the system unstable.
How to fix auto-restart (software steps)
Follow these in order, usually one of them fixes it:
- Update the OS. Go to Settings > software update and install the latest iOS/Android. Many reboot bugs are already patched in updates.
- Update or remove the suspect app. If reboots always happen while using one particular app, update it, if it persists, uninstall it to test.
- Free up storage. Keep at least 2-3GB free. Clear videos, duplicate photos, and large app caches.
- Check battery health. iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Android: use a diagnostics app. If health is low, that’s an early hint of a hardware issue.
- Reset settings (not erase). “Reset All Settings” restores settings without deleting your photos/data. This clears setting conflicts that trigger reboots.
- Boot in Safe Mode (Android). Safe Mode runs the phone without third-party apps. If reboots stop in Safe Mode, an app is definitely the cause.
If the phone reboots in a loop (bootloop, logo on, off, on again repeatedly), or shuts off then restarts on its own at around 30-40% battery, stop using it and back up your data right away. This is often a failing battery or a board issue, not software. Continued use risks data loss and the phone can die completely and refuse to power on.
HARDWARE causes (needs checking)
If you’ve tried every software step and the phone still restarts on its own, the cause is most likely an internal part. These are the hardware signs:
• Degraded / swollen battery, an aged battery can’t hold a stable voltage; when load rises (opening the camera, gaming) the voltage drops sharply and the phone reboots. This most often happens around 20-40% battery.
• Water damage / corrosion, moisture on the board causes intermittent short circuits, leading to random reboots.
• Loose battery connector, after a drop or a repair, a battery connector that isn’t seated right can cut power momentarily.
• Board fault, a power component (PMIC) or cracked solder can make the phone reboot with no fixed pattern.
The number-one hardware cause of auto-restart is an aged battery. A degraded battery looks fine while idle, but the moment the phone demands high current, the voltage plunges below the minimum and the system is forced to reboot to protect itself. That’s why many reboot cases stop the instant the battery is replaced. If it isn’t the battery, it’s a board issue, and that needs proper inspection, not guesswork.
