Inner Screen or Cover Screen? Know Which One Broke Before You Get Quoted

By August 18, 2026August 22nd, 20264 Comments
Short answer

Close the phone. If the damage is visible while it is shut, it is the cover screen, the cheaper repair, from RM350. If the phone looks fine closed but the fault appears when you open it, it is the inner folding screen, from RM850. They are separate parts and separate jobs, and on some models the gap between them is over RM1,700.

This is the single most useful thing you can work out before you get quoted. Plenty of people walk in convinced their foldable needs a four-figure repair when the actual job is a few hundred ringgit, and a few walk in expecting the cheap one and get a shock. Two minutes with your own phone settles it.

The two screens, plainly

Inner screen, from RM850The large folding display inside. A flexible panel bonded into the frame, with the crease running across the middle. This is the expensive part on every Flip and every Fold.
Cover screen, from RM350The display on the outside. On a Flip it is the small lid screen; on a Fold it is the tall front screen you use with the phone closed. Rigid glass, simpler job.
The gap is bigger than most people expect

On a Galaxy Z Flip 4, the cover screen is RM400 and the inner is RM1,180. On a Z Fold 6 the cover is RM850 and the inner is RM2,250. Getting this wrong in either direction wastes everyone’s time, which is why we open the phone and check before quoting anything.

Three questions that identify it

1. Close the phone completely. Can you see the damage?

If yes, cracks, a dead area, lines, or black patches visible with the phone shut, that is the cover screen. The inner panel is not even exposed when the phone is closed.

2. Open it. Does the fault appear or get worse?

If the phone looks perfect closed but shows a line, a dead strip, discolouration or unresponsive touch once opened, that is the inner screen. Faults that follow the crease line are almost always the inner panel.

3. Does touch work where the picture still looks fine?

A panel can look undamaged and still have stopped registering touch in one area. Run a finger slowly across the whole surface, opened and closed, and note where it stops responding. That tells you which panel has failed even when nothing is visibly cracked.

The film lifting off your inner display is not a broken screen. It is the factory protector, a separate layer, and pulling it off yourself is one of the fastest ways to turn a free problem into a four-figure one.

Things that look like screen damage but are not

The peeling inner filmThe factory protector lifting at the edges, usually starting at the crease. The panel underneath is often perfectly fine. See foldable screen film peeling.
The crease itselfEvery foldable has one. A visible crease line is normal and is not a fault.
A line across the displayThis one is a panel fault, and it does not repair itself. See black lines on a foldable screen.
Hinge noise or a gapA separate problem from the screen, with a separate cost. See Z Flip and Z Fold hinge problems.

What each repair costs

PartFromUp to
Inner (folding) screenRM850RM2,550
Cover (outer) screenRM350RM850

Exact prices depend on the model. Every Flip and Fold we handle is listed on the Samsung foldable repair price page, and the Z Flip 4 has its own breakdown at Z Flip 4 screen replacement price. Parts are genuine-grade. Current as at 18 August 2026.

If both are damaged

It happens, usually after a drop that lands badly. Each panel is quoted separately, and you can do one without the other, some people replace the inner screen and live with a scratched cover for a while. We will tell you which one actually affects using the phone, and which one is cosmetic.

Before you decide

Diagnosis is freeWe open the phone, confirm which panel failed, and check whether the hinge or anything else was damaged in the same incident.
You get the exact figure firstFor your model, before any work starts. No obligation to proceed.
Warranty is worth checkingIf the panel failed with no impact and the phone is in warranty, ask Samsung first. See does Samsung’s warranty cover a cracked inner screen.
Sometimes the answer is don’tOn older models with several faults, the repair can approach what the phone is worth. We work that through in repair or trade in.

Common questions

How do I know if it is the inner or cover screen?

Close the phone. Damage visible while shut is the cover screen. Damage that only appears when open is the inner screen. If you are unsure, bring it in, diagnosis is free.

Why is the inner screen so much more expensive?

It is a flexible folding panel bonded into the frame, not a flat sheet of glass. The part costs far more and the replacement is a more involved job.

Can I replace just the cover screen?

Yes. They are independent repairs. If only the cover is damaged, that is all you pay for.

My inner screen has a line but no crack. Is that still a screen problem?

Yes. Foldable panels can fail without visible cracking, often from pressure or from something trapped when the phone closed.

The film is lifting. Do I need a new screen?

Usually not. That is the factory protector, not the panel. Bring it in before pulling at it.
