Signs you’re looking at a top case, not just a key

One or more keys stopped respondingEspecially after a spill, or after crumbs and dust built up over time. A key that used to work and now does nothing is the most common trigger.

A key repeats or types doubleThe switch underneath is worn or contaminated. Cleaning fixes some cases; others need the assembly replaced.

Visible crack around the keyboard or palm restUsually from a drop or from the lid being closed on something. The crack itself doesn’t stop it working, but it usually gets worse.

Why “top case” means more than the keyboard

Apple stopped selling individual keyboard parts for unibody MacBooks. Since roughly 2012, the keyboard, trackpad, palm rest and the top half of the aluminium body are built as one sealed assembly called the top case. On many models the battery sits directly underneath it too.

That’s why a technician can’t just swap one key, and why the job costs more than “just a keyboard” implies. It also explains the trackpad connection: if a battery swells under the top case, the trackpad is usually the first thing to show it, since it sits right above the cells.

Liquid and keyboard problems are usually the same job

Frequently asked questions

Can you just replace one key instead of the whole top case?

On most MacBooks built since 2012, no. The keyboard is sealed into one assembly, so an individual key isn’t sold as a separate part. We’ll confirm this for your exact model when you bring it in.

My trackpad clicks by itself. Is that a top case problem?

Often, yes. A trackpad that clicks on its own, feels stiff, or sits slightly raised is a common sign of a swelling battery underneath. Stop using it and bring it in soon, a swollen battery isn’t a “wait and see” issue.

How much does a top case replacement cost?

Is this covered under AppleCare?

Depends on the cause. Manufacturing faults are usually covered; liquid damage and physical cracks usually aren’t. Check your AppleCare status before paying anyone, including us.

Can I keep using it while some keys still work?

You can, but if the cause is liquid or a failing battery, waiting tends to make the job bigger, not smaller. If it’s just one worn key, it’s lower risk to delay.
