Foldable Inner Screen Film Peeling: It Is Not a Broken Screen

By August 13, 2026September 1st, 2026No Comments
Quick answer

The film lifting off your foldable’s inner screen is the factory-applied protector, not the display itself. Your screen is almost certainly fine. Do not pull it off, and do not replace it with an ordinary screen protector, because that layer is part of how the display survives being folded.

This is one of the few problems we see where the honest answer saves the customer a great deal of money, so it is worth being clear about it.

A bubble or a lifting edge on the inner screen of a Z Flip or Z Fold looks alarming. On a phone where a new inner display runs into four figures, people assume the worst. In most cases what has failed costs a fraction of that, and sometimes nothing at all.

What that layer actually is

Samsung applies a protective film to the inner display at the factory. It is not an accessory someone added at the shop. It is fitted as part of the display assembly, and on foldables it does real work: it spreads pressure across the soft surface of the panel and it takes the abrasion that would otherwise reach the display directly.

The inner panel of a foldable is not covered in hard glass like an ordinary phone. It has to bend, so the top layer is soft. That softness is exactly why the film matters.

On a normal phone the protector is optional. On a foldable it is part of the display stack.

Why it peels

It starts at the creaseThe fold flexes that spot thousands of times. Adhesive fatigue there is normal wear, not a fault.
HeatA hot car or direct sun softens the adhesive. Peeling very often appears after a hot day.
Edge lift from fingernailsOnce an edge lifts, normal use catches it and the lifted area grows quickly.
MoistureHumidity or a spill reaching under the film breaks the bond. This one is worth taking seriously, see below.

Peeling after a year or two of use is expected on these devices. It is one of the trade-offs of a screen that folds.

The mistake that turns this into an expensive repair

Peeling it off yourself.

It feels like the obvious move. The film is loose, it looks like a sticker, and removing it makes the screen look clean again for about a week. Then the problems start.

What happens after you remove it

The bare panel surface scratches from fingernails alone. Pressure that the film used to spread now lands on one point. The exposed edge at the crease is open to dust and moisture. And on some models, peeling the film lifts part of the layer underneath with it, which turns a protector problem into a display problem in a single motion.

We have replaced inner displays that were entirely healthy a month earlier, where the only thing that happened in between was the owner removing a lifting film.

What to do instead

Leave it in placeEven fully lifted at one corner, it is protecting more than it is annoying you. Live with it until it can be replaced properly.
Have it replaced, not removedThe old film comes off and a correct replacement goes on in the same session, so the panel is never left bare.
Do not fit a normal protectorOrdinary tempered glass or thick film cannot fold. Fitting one to an inner screen damages the display when the phone closes.
Check warranty firstSamsung has at times replaced inner films for foldable owners. If your phone is in warranty, ask them before paying anyone.

When peeling is a warning of something worse

Most peeling is cosmetic wear. There are three cases where it is not, and these are worth bringing in promptly:

What you also seeWhat it may mean
Discolouration or cloudiness under the filmMoisture has reached the panel
A line or dead pixels along the creaseThe display itself is failing
Peeling plus a noisy or gappy hingeDebris and moisture are getting in at the hinge

If it is a line rather than lifting film, see a black line across a Z Flip or Z Fold screen. If the hinge is also noisy or will not close flush, that is covered in Z Flip and Z Fold hinge problems.

What it costs

Replacing an inner protective film is a minor job and nothing like the cost of a display. We do not publish a single figure for it because it depends on the model and on what we find underneath, and we would rather quote you accurately after looking than advertise a number we might have to change at the counter.

For context, an inner display replacement runs from RM850 to RM2,550 depending on the model. Getting the film sorted is the cheap way to avoid ending up in that table.

Frequently asked questions

Is my screen broken if the film is peeling?

Usually not. The film is a separate layer applied at the factory. If the display underneath is clear, with no lines, no dead areas and normal touch response, the panel is fine.

Can I just peel it off?

We strongly recommend against it. The bare inner panel is soft, scratches easily, and on some models the film does not come away cleanly from the layer beneath.

Can I put a normal screen protector on the inner screen?

No. Ordinary protectors are not made to fold. Fitting one to the inner display puts pressure across the crease every time the phone closes.

Will Samsung replace the film?

Samsung has offered inner film replacement for foldable owners in the past, and terms vary by market and by model. If your phone is still in warranty it is worth asking them first.

How long should the film last?

There is no fixed figure. Peeling starting at the crease after a year or two of normal use is common. Heat and humidity shorten it.
