Z Flip and Z Fold Hinge Problems: Noise, Gaps and Why They End in a Broken Screen

By August 13, 2026No Comments
Quick answer

A grinding noise, a gap when the phone is closed, or a hinge that no longer holds its angle are mechanical faults, not screen faults. They are worth acting on early, because a failing hinge is the fastest route to a failed inner screen, and the screen is by far the more expensive part.

Most people bring a foldable in because of the screen. The hinge is what quietly caused the problem in a large share of those cases.

It is the part of a folding phone that does the most work and gets the least attention. It carries the whole opening and closing action, it protects the fold of the display, and on most models it is also the hardest area to keep sealed against dust and moisture.

What a healthy hinge feels like

Before diagnosing a fault it helps to know the baseline. On a hinge in good condition:

It is silentOpening and closing produces no grinding, crunching or clicking. A soft mechanical sound is normal. Grit sounds are not.
It holds any angleStop it halfway and it stays there. On a Flip this is the feature people use for hands-free photos.
It closes flushClosed, the two halves sit against each other with an even, minimal gap. Newer models close almost completely flat.
Resistance is evenThe effort to open is the same through the whole arc, and the same as it was when the phone was new.

The four faults we see most

1. Grinding or crunching when you open it

This is almost always debris. Sand, pocket grit and dust work into the hinge mechanism, and every fold drags those particles across machined metal surfaces.

Stop using the fold action if you can. Each open and close with grit inside does more damage, and the particles do not stay in the hinge. They migrate towards the edge of the display, which is how a mechanical problem becomes a screen problem.

Do not do this

Do not spray lubricant, compressed air or contact cleaner into a foldable hinge. Compressed air drives debris further in and towards the panel edge, and lubricants attract more dust and can reach the adhesive holding the display stack together. Both make an inexpensive clean into an expensive screen job.

2. A gap when the phone is closed

Some gap is by design on older models. A gap that has grown, or that is wider at one end than the other, is not.

An uneven gap usually means the hinge has been stressed, often from a drop while open, or that something is trapped inside preventing a full close. It matters because the gap is the door: whatever fits through it reaches the fold of the screen.

3. The hinge no longer holds its angle

The mechanism uses cams and springs to create friction at any position. When those wear or the lubrication breaks down, the phone starts to flop shut or spring open on its own.

On its own this is an annoyance rather than a danger. Combined with a drop, it often indicates the internal parts have shifted and are no longer supporting the panel evenly across the fold.

4. It has become stiff or notchy

A hinge that suddenly needs more force, or that catches at one point in the arc, is telling you something is binding inside. Forcing it past the catch is the single most common way customers turn a repairable hinge into a cracked inner display.

Almost every expensive foldable repair we see started as a cheap mechanical problem someone kept using.

Why the hinge decides the fate of the screen

The inner display of a foldable bends across the hinge area every time the phone closes. The panel relies on the hinge to control exactly how it bends: the radius of the fold, how evenly the two halves meet, and how well the fold is shielded from what is in your pocket.

When the hinge stops doing that job, the panel is asked to bend in a way it was not designed to. A tighter radius on one side, a particle pressing into a single point, or an uneven close all concentrate stress at the crease, and the crease is where flexible displays fail.

This is why we treat hinge symptoms as urgent even when the screen still looks perfect. The screen is the part that costs between RM850 and RM2,550 depending on the model. The hinge issue that will destroy it is usually a much smaller job caught early.

Is it the hinge or the screen?

What you noticeMore likely
Noise when opening, screen looks fineHinge
Phone will not close flushHinge or trapped debris
Line or dead area along the foldInner screen
Flops shut on its ownHinge
Touch unresponsive near the creaseInner screen
Noise and a new lineBoth, and the hinge came first

If the symptom is a line rather than a mechanical fault, the fuller explanation is in our guide to a black line across a Z Flip or Z Fold screen.

What we do about it

Hinge work is not a single fixed job, which is why we do not publish one price for it. What is actually needed varies a great deal: some phones need the mechanism opened, cleaned and re-lubricated, some need a hinge assembly replaced, and some arrive with the hinge already having damaged the panel, in which case the honest answer is that the screen is now the main cost.

What we do promise is the order things happen in. We open the phone in Maintenance Mode where the device supports it, so your data stays protected, we tell you what we find, and we give you a fixed quote before any work begins. Diagnosis is free, and if the answer is that it is not worth doing, we say that too.

How to keep a hinge alive

Check the fold before closingEspecially after the beach, a workshop, or a bag with keys and coins. One particle is enough.
Close it deliberatelyLet the halves meet rather than snapping the phone shut. Snapping drives whatever is inside straight into the panel.
Keep it out of extreme heatA dashboard in the sun softens adhesives and thins the hinge lubricant.
Act on the first noiseA clean while the hinge still moves freely is a small job. After the panel is marked, it is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foldable hinge be repaired, or does it always need replacing?

Both happen. Debris and dry lubrication can often be dealt with by cleaning and servicing the mechanism. Bent or worn internal parts usually mean replacing the assembly. We can only tell you which after opening it, which is why the diagnosis is free.

Is a gap when closed a defect?

On earlier Fold and Flip generations a small even gap is normal by design. A gap that has grown, or one that is wider at one end, is worth checking.

Will Samsung’s warranty cover a hinge?

It may, if the fault appeared on its own within the warranty period with no sign of impact or liquid. If your phone is still in warranty, ask them first, because a covered repair is the better outcome for you.

Is my data safe during hinge work?

Hardware work does not normally touch your data, and where the phone supports Maintenance Mode we use it so your content stays locked while the device is open. We still recommend a backup before any repair.

The hinge is noisy but the screen is perfect. Can I wait?

You can, but this is the one symptom we would not wait on. The noise means something is moving against surfaces it should not touch, and the display is downstream of that.
